After an overnight stay in Sepilok, JJ and I headed further inland to Deramakot Forest Reserve and then looped back via Kinabatangan River. Both areas offer some of the best wildlife watching in Southeast Asia. These are the amazing animals we saw, places we stayed and how to plan a similar ecotourism adventure.
(more…)Back in April, JJ and I went on a bucket list trip to Malaysian Borneo. Our adventure started in the small town of Sepilok on the northeast coast of Sabah state. The Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) guided night walk offered us a perfect first opportunity to view some of Borneo’s unique nocturnal wildlife.

(more…)Gunung Leuser National Park covers 7,927 km2 in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. This tropical rainforest is one of the last places on earth where critically endangered orangutans live in the wild. Seeing these great apes has been on my bucket list for ages, so over the Easter long weekend, JJ and I finally made orangutan trekking happen!

JJ and I just got back from a 10 day trip to Sumatra, Indonesia. It was finally time to tick orangutan trekking off the bucket list! Here’s my plane outfit, plus what I packed in my carry-on and checked bag for this trip. A stopover in the UAE’s capital and largest Emirate
Because of the crazy number of flights required to get from Sydney to Kigali, JJ and I made the decision to stopover in Abu Dhabi on the way to Rwanda. We were very glad we did!
